Scarlett Chan is an experienced lawyer with a diverse background in various areas of law. She specializes in General Litigation, Insurance Defence, Employment and Labour, as well as Municipal and Regulatory Prosecutions.

Scarlett’s legal career began in Criminal Defence, where she worked alongside one of the most renowned criminal defence lawyers in Edmonton. During this time, she handled numerous high-profile cases, including homicides and regulatory offences.

Notably, she was fully involved in a three-week jury trial during her third year of law school, resulting in her being named in a written decision in that trial as a law student. Additionally, she defended clients charged with offences under the Health Act, the Navigation Protection Act, and the Traffic Safety Act.

After gaining valuable experience in the field of criminal law, Scarlett transitioned to become a Crown Prosecutor in Edmonton Prosecutions and later in Specialized Prosecutions. In her role as a prosecutor, she focused on a wide range of offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, with particular emphasis on crimes of violence, sexual assault, and child sexual interference. She also handled low complexity domestic courtroom matters and specialized in prosecuting technological crimes, such as online child sexual exploitation.

Scarlett’s achievements as a prosecutor include successfully prosecuting a highly significant online child luring case involving 92 victims. She played a crucial role in arguing for the admission of community impact statements at sentencing, showcasing her dedication to ensuring justice for victims. Scarlett has also been involved in prosecuting regulatory offences, including prosecuting regulatory offences under the Tobacco Tax Act and the Wildlife Act.

In addition to her legal practice, Scarlett is a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law. She teaches the MacIntyre/Sopinka Jury Trial Advocacy Moot, where she imparts her knowledge and expertise in conducting full jury trials in a moot court setting.

Outside of her professional life, Scarlett enjoys traveling and has visited over 45 countries. She also maintains an active lifestyle, participating in recreational ball hockey, soccer, and Peloton cycling classes.
