It is not unusual for law firms to have litigation practice groups. However, at Brownlee LLP, litigation has been one of the central core practice areas of the firm, with over half of the firm's practitioners being active litigators involved in virtually all aspects of civil litigation. This litigation covers almost every conceivable type of dispute resolution process.

The firm represents a number of insurers and, as a result, much of the firm's litigation practice is "defence" oriented. This insurance practice has represented a longstanding partnership with the insurance industry covering a wide array of key defence areas as described in further detail under the "Insurance" practice area. However, the firm also handles a significant amount of other litigation such as construction, constitutional, commercial, municipal, school, intellectual property, environmental, and employment/labour. The firm is optimistic that this "non-insurance litigation" practice will continue to be one of the major growth areas of the firm.

Due to the somewhat unique aspect of municipal government and administrative law practice, the firm is engaged in numerous quasi-judicial matters; principally, as counsel for our clients before administrative tribunals and boards. These quasi-judicial matters cover a wide array of areas ranging from expropriations to taxation, planning and development to electrical and gas regulatory work.

The firm has been pleased to advise and represent the Province of Alberta on a variety of important issues and to litigate those issues at various levels of Court in Alberta. This has included constitutional references throughout Alberta and in neighbouring provinces in all levels of the Courts including the Supreme Court of Canada.
